GUEST LECTURE WITH SCREENING
OLIVER RESSLER & TOM WAIBEL
"The Zapatista Good Government" / "Die gute Regierung der Zapatistas"

"The Zapatista Good Government" is a video (31 min., 2006) Oliver
Ressler & Tom Waibel carried out in the framework of the exhibition
project "Alternative Economics, Alternative Societies." The video
discusses the Zapatista Good Government Junta, a self-governing, direct
democracy network, which is currently present in certain rural areas of
Chiapas, Mexico.

Ressler and Waibel will present the video and parts of earlier videos,
talk about the current situation and strategies of the Zapatistas in
Chiapas/Mexico and describe the artistic strategy of "Alternative
Economics, Alternative Societies" (check out www.ressler.at for more
information).

OLIVER RESSLER was born in 1970, lives and works in Vienna in Austria.
Ressler is an artist who carries out theme specific exhibitions,
projects in public space and videos on issues such as racism, migration,
genetic engineering, economics, forms of resistance and social
alternatives. His ongoing project “Alternative Economics, Alternative
Societies” was realized 19 times, including solo-exhibitions in Galerija
Skuc, Ljubljana, 2003; Kunstraum der Universität Lüneburg, D, 2004;
Centro Cultural Conde Duque, MediaLabMadrid, Madrid, 2004; Museum of
Modern and Contemporary Art, Rijeka, 2005; Platform Garanti Contemporary
Art Center, Istanbul, 2005; Museum of Contemporary Art, Novi Sad, 2005
and Museum of Contemporary Art Belgrade, 2005. Many of Ressler's works
are being realized in collaborations, such as “European Corrections
Corporation” (with Martin Krenn), “Boom!” (with David Thorne) and the
film “Venezuela from Below” (67 min., 2004, with Dario Azzellini).
In 2005 Ressler participated in group exhibitions such as “Making Things
Public”, ZKM, Karlsruhe; “Wayward Economy”, Main Trend Gallery, Taipei;
Prague Biennale 2; 9th international Festival of Video/Arte/Electrónica,
Lima and Berlin Photography Festival 2005.

TOM WAIBEL, Mag. phil., born 1968 lives in Vienna, Austria when he is
not spending his time in Middle-America. Since founding the cultural
non-profit association 'Kinoki' in 1992 he dedicates his efforts in
creating situations of audiovisual auto-gestion like multi-media
manifestations and street-theater in Vienna and grassroots-media
empowerment work in Chiapas, Mexico and Guatemala. Some of his
video-documentaries have been presented by Kinoki, like 'Cine Mecapal'
(25 min., 2001), 'Color de la tierra' (46 min., 2002) or 'Rilajmam' (77
