Title lecture: Return to Sender / "Smooth Gentrification"

The project Return to Sender was running during the Art Festival "Soho in
Ottakring". The Soho Event was part of an ongoing process hyping the 16th
district and featuring it as "multicultural ghetto".

During my research it became clear that the municipality was very interested
in Soho also because the "Gürtel" - one of the main traffic streets
surrounding the inner districts of Vienna was ready to be "revitalized".
There was the wish and need to bring investment.
One project called Urbion supported by the European Union was aiming at
valorising the city railway arches alongside the "Gürtel" in order to link
the districts that are separated by the "Gürtel highway". The area around
the "Gürtel" should become more attractive and of course there was much more
prostitution at the street of "Gürtel" which had to be relocated.

For the Soho-In-Ottakring project each year spaces at the 16th district had
been rented temporarily to present artworks. From this perspective
gentrification was boosted by that art event.
In my work Return to Sender I broached the issue of gentrification by
producing 3 postcards in holiday-styles. The postcards were for free and
showed montages of the 16th district as a holiday place for artists in order
to show the process of changing the grown urban structure of the district
towards a gentrified place. On the backside of the postcards there was a
weblink so that one could get some brief information about gentrification
and other links for deeper information on this topic.
