EXHIBITION PROJECT @ SPLIT

The Conceptual (Art) Practices Class, of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, is perceived as a working, living and exchange platform that insists on a project-seminar-modular teaching processes. A theoretical and art-critical research approach toward space, community and new technology is of crucial importance.

The idea of making a bridge between new media technology and conceptuality means that our engagement is not simply and solely bound to technology, but to the use of technology for developing politically critical and socially engaged topics, projects and concepts. Any context provider from pencil to computer is welcome. We try to rethink how the relation between art, society, culture and politics is established, and in what way artists can function within the new global world and use strategies of activist, theoretical and critical knowledge.

Perception of War – An Approximation in Six Fragments
25 min, DVD, 2003 // col./bw // opensour©e A/CH/D,
multidisciplinary short film: animation, montage, agitprop, found
footage, documentary, digital montage.

Using different techniques (animation, agitprop, montage, found footage, documentary and digital processing) the observation of war
is viewed from different perspectives in six interrelated parts. The subject
'war' evokes an insurmountable number of questions and is therefore
incomprehensible. In a fragmentary process of an endless ensemble of
possibilities, they try to organize their own perplexity concerning the war in
Iraq. (catalogue, 33rd IFF Rotterdam)

Video-performance: Kill Your Dreams!

“your own personal Jesus; co mi boh dal; someone to hear your prayers; ked mi zivot bral; someone who cares; ked som sa pojebal; someone who’s there; tak som si povedal; (reach out and touch faith); ze ja mam svoj plan.”

KOLOMAN KANN

Remix music lecture: The CD “Versandhauskatalogprogrammmusik” was made by an artist radio collective from Graz, called “Endlich Katzenersatz Wurstenden 1490” (EKW1490). Several musicians, including Kann were asked to present a remix version of the CD. Kann describe the decision of making a remix of “push-up body.”

Installation turntables: the short movie is a reflection between cultural productions and labor.

Interview mit Jemand:

Interview.

Good evening Jemand, just to begin, first question.

How does it feel to wake up dying?

Are you happy?

Do you have any friends?

Did you shoot yourself up?

Did you love yourself already?

Don’t you think this happens exceptionally way too often in your life?

Have you ever been happy?

Do you want to pop off now?

Do you want to feel loved?

Do you like boys or girls?

Do you excrete urine without problem?

(Do) you need a hug?

What have you done with your life?

Can you justify your being?

Did you ever think of the purgatory?

Did you at least begin to say your prayers?

Could it be that you gave up your fears?

Can you stand the collapsing pictures?

Don’t you eat everything?

May I eat it then?

Hey, are you still breathing?

It’s a lot of work, and it seems (to be) too much for you. Can’t you enjoy the nectar anymore?

And adore the flaming sun and the radiating green?

Will you call back?

What you think? Could this absurd world be your final abyss or your second mother?

Do you believe you can dream forever?

Do you know what wake you up?

HENNING SCHORN

Iconodules II, video loop 2003, copyleft

It is a work that questions icons in society. The video loop was shot at the Dr. Karl Lueger statue in Vienna. Dr. Lueger is probably Vienna’s most famous mayor; lots of places, streets and buildings are still named after him. When searching through archives one can find various speeches of him with unambiguous and harsh anti-Semite and demagogic content. The video confronts icons and contexts, in the case of dr. Lueger, his anti-Semite context to which he belonged – and still belongs – to.

JULIA WAGNER

2 projects presentation:

  1. The first project deals with the situation of a sculpture by the US-artist Joel Shapiro displayed in front of the US-Embassy in Vienna. It opens questions about public spaces and the role of art project being presented at specific spots.

  2. The second is a documentation of a public art project in Salzburg, August 2004. The project’s aim was to make the public aware of the fact that Salzburg as a tourist city offers an enormous amount of beds for paying guests from all countries, but has failed to provide 45 sleeping places for asylum seekers.

GUESTS OF THE CLASS: LECTURE PRESENTATION BY

RALO MAYER AND PHILIPP HAUPT/ Manoa Free University

Ralo Mayer (1976) and Philipp Haupt (1975),

both based in Vienna, have collaborated in

numerous collective projects in the field between

art and politics. Since 2003 they have a

fellowship at the Manoa Free University,

fieldtripping through diverse places of knowledge

changaranga. manoafreeuniversity.org

LECTURE/PRESENTATION:

Gothenburg N.B. is an artistic research of the

politics of visualizations and cartographies of

power structures. It starts from two distinct

crystallizations: Constant's proto-situationist

New Babylon project and the protests against the

EU-summit in Göteborg 2001. The presentation will

focus on the research processes by presenting

some benchmarks: from network diagrams to cheap

.vrml models, from laser forensics to crystal

cabinets - the depiction of all this being

refracted through Deleuze' theory of the time

crystal.

ON LINE PROJECT PRESENTATION

id:dev

split identity

Started as an art/research platform on the topic of identity and its possibilities for definition within and beyond current theories (e.g. patchwork-identity, virtual identity, gender studies, etc.), the project will develop different interdisciplinary levels and presentation strategies.

The project group id:dev is in permanent struggle with its “big brother” that presents himself with copyrights and ideological contents.

Under these conditions the id:dev project collective (founded in 2003) is exploring the thin line between institutionalised critique and different strategies of exchanging and archiving life’s experience and knowledge.
