Inhalt:Die Arbeitsgruppe Plattform Geschichtspolitik ist eine Initiative von Student_innen, Aktivist_innen und Lehrenden, die der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien nahe stehen und versteht sich als offenes Kollektiv im Sinne jener Arbeitsgruppen die im Rahmen der Akademiebesetzung 2009/2010 entstanden sind. Sie markiert den Beginn eines kontinuierlichen Prozesses, in dem die Teilhabe der Akademie an Kolonialismus, (Austro-)Faschismus und Nazismus kritisch reflektiert und öffentlich verhandelt wird. Wie in österreichischen Institutionen allzu üblich, wurden diese Geschichten der Akademie bisher verdrängt. Eines der wenigen Projekte, welches Faschismus und Nazismus an der Akademie thematisierte, ist ein 1990 von einer Gruppe Studierender, gegen beträchtliche Widerstände aus der Institution, initiiertes und organisiertes Symposium samt nachfolgender Publikation (siehe empfohlene Fachliteratur: „Im Reich der Kunst“). Seit Oktober 2009 versucht die Plattform Geschichtspolitik nun an die bestehende Arbeit anzuknüpfen um breitere Diskussionen über Geschichtspolitiken an der Akademie zu evozieren.

Schwerpunkte im Wintersemester 2010/2011:

• Zeitzeug_innen-Projekt (Filmprojekt und Videoarchiv)Erstellung eines Videoarchivs aus Interviews mit Personen, die von den Nazis aus der Akademie vertrieben wurden oder Akademieangehörigen die sich im Widerstand gegen den Nazismus betätigten. Betrachtung der an der Institution betriebenen Geschichtspolitiken im Rahmen eines Filmprojekts, unter anderem anhand von Gesprächen mit ehemaligen und aktuellen Akademieangehörigen.• Weiterführung kritischer Interventionen in architektonische und räumliche Manifestationen der letzten beiden Semester.• Abhaltung von Workshops zu geschichtspolitischen Manifestationen im öffentlichen Raum in Linz und Wien.• Alle neuen Teilnehmer_innen haben die Möglichkeit andere Arbeitsfelder gemäß ihren Interessen zu definieren.

Content:The work group "Plattform Geschichtspolitik" (Platform for History Politics*) is an initiative of students, activists and teachers associated with the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, which defines itself as an open collective, according to the logic of the work groups that have been formed within the Academy occupation of 2009/2010. It marks the beginning of a continuous process of critically reflecting and publicly dealing with the Academy’s participation in Colonialism, (Austro-)Fascism and Nazism. As is all too usual for Austrian institutions, these histories of the Academy have been repressed thus far. One of the few projects that publicly dealt with the fascist and nazist history of the Academy is a symposium and a subsequent publication that were initiated and organized by a group of students in 1990 who were then faced with the opposition of the institution (see the recommended scholarly reading: “Im Reich der Kunst”). Since October 2009, the work group has tried to link its activities to that work, aiming to evoke a broader discussion of history politics at the Academy.

Foci within the winter term 2010/2011:

• Contemporary witnesses project (film project and video archive)Creation of a video archive consisting of interviews with individuals who were expelled from the institution by the Nazis and Academy associates who participated in the resistance against Nazism. Examination of the history politics that had been carried out at the Academy thus far within a film project; through, e.g. talks with former and recent Academy associates.• Continuation of the last semesters’ critical interventions into architectural and spatial manifestations.• Organization of workshops dealing with historic-political manifestations in public space in Linz and Vienna.• All new participants have the possibility to define different fields of work according to their interests.

"History Politics" is a literal translation of the German term “Geschichtspolitik” and is used since there is no generally-accepted translation. It refers to the fact that the construction of history and its political interpretation are immanent to history as such.

Seit Oktober 2009 versucht die Plattform Geschichtspolitik nun an die bestehende Arbeit anzuknüpfen um eine Plattform für breitere Diskussionen über Geschichtspolitiken an der Akademie zu etablieren. Angesichts der beträchtlichen Anzahl relevanter Themen bei gleichzeitig beschränkten Ressourcen, wurde entschieden den Fokus während der ersten Phase des Projekts auf einen begrenzten Zeitraum zu legen, jenen kurz vor bis kurz nach dem Nationalsozialismus. Hierbei wurden vier Schwerpunkte definiert: Interviews mit Zeitzeug_innen, Provenienzforschung über die Bestände der Bibliothek und der Kunstsammlungen der Akademie, die Restitution etwaiger geraubter Güter und kritische Interventionen in architektonische und räumliche Manifestationen.

Im Sommersemester 2010 soll weiter an den bisherigen Schwerpunkten gearbeitet werden, wobei alle neuen Teilnehmer_innen auch die Möglichkeit haben bei Bedarf andere Arbeitsfelder gemäß ihren Interessen festzulegen. Darüber hinaus ist die weitere Vernetzung mit Initiativen geplant die sich außerhalb der Akademie mit verwandten Themen befassen:

Führung durch geschichtspolitische Manifestationen an der Universität Wien von Herbert Posch (Institut für Zeitgeschichte, Uni Wien) inklusive einem Treffen mit Bele Marx und Minna Antowa, den Umgestalter_innen des Siegfriedkopfs
Stadtrundgang zu ausgewählten "Türkendenkmälern" im 1. Bezirk mit Silvia Dallinger, Marion Gollner, Johann Heiss und Johanna Witzeling (Institut für Sozialanthropologie, Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften)

Plattform Geschichtspolitik, spring term 2010

The work group "Platform for History Politics"* is an initiative of students, activists and teachers associated with the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, which defines itself as an open collective, according to the logic of the work groups that have been formed within the Academy occupation of 2009/2010. It marks the beginning of a continuous process of critically reflecting and publicly dealing with the Academy's participation in Colonialism, (Austro-)Fascism and National Socialism. As is all too usual for Austrian institutions, these histories of the Academy have been repressed thus far. One of the few projects that publicly dealt with the fascist and National Socialist history of the Academy (the only one?) is a symposium and a subsequent publication that were initiated and organized by a group of students in 1990 who were then faced with the opposition of the institution (see the recommended scholarly reading: "Im Reich der Kunst").

Since October 2009, the working group has tried to link its activities to that work, aiming at establishing a platform for the broader discussion of history politics at the Academy. Considering the overwhelming quantity of relevant subjects and simultaneously limited resources, it was decided to focus on a certain time period during the first phase of the project, the one spanning from shortly before until shortly after National Socialism. Four subjects were defined for concentrated work: interviews with contemporary witnesses, the provenience research of the Academy's library and art collections, the restitution of possible dispossessed objects, and critical interventions in architectural and spatial manifestations.

During the spring 2010 term, those subjects should be elaborated on, whereas new participants will have the possibility of defining different fields of work according to their interests if required. Furthermore, additional networking with initiatives dealing with related subjects outside of the Academy is projected, such as:

Guided tour alongside the historical manifestations at the University of Vienna by Herbert Posch (Institute for Contemporary History, University of Vienna) including a meeting with Bele Marx and Minna Antowa who reconfigured the "Siegfriedkopf" monument
City tour alongside selected "Türkendenkmäler" (monuments referring to the Ottoman Wars in Europe) in the 1st district by Silvia Dallinger, Marion Gollner, Johann Heiss and Johanna Witzeling (Institute for Social Anthropology at the Austrian Academy of Sciences)

Wie werden und wie wurden Geschichtspolitiken an der Akademie der bildenden Künste betrieben?Inwieweit wird und wurde dabei die Teilhabe an Kolonialismus, Faschismus und Nationalsozialismus eingeschlossen?Wo treten Lücken, wo Bruchlinien, wo Kontinuitäten auf?Welche Rollen spielen Vergessen, Verdrängen, Selbstviktimisierung?Welche geschichtspolitischen Manifestationen gibt es an der Akademie – und welche Manifestationen gibt es nicht?

Diese Fragen markieren den Beginn der Lehrveranstaltung – und damit der Etablierung einer kontinuierlichen „Plattform Geschichtspolitik“ an der Akademie. Sie sollen mit weiteren, zu erarbeitenden Fragen in Verbindung gesetzt werden. Die kritische Betrachtung exemplarischer geschichtspolitischer Prozesse an vergleichbaren Institutionen, soll die Sensibilität zur Bestandsaufnahme des Ist-Zustands im direkten Studien- und Arbeitsumfeld schärfen. Mit einer vorläufigen Sichtbarmachung aufgespürter Gepflogenheiten und Gewöhnlichkeiten, Kuriositäten und Ungeheuerlichkeiten, sowie anderweitig bemerkenswerter [Un-]Auffälligkeiten sollen breitere Diskussionen über Geschichtspolitiken an der Akademie angestoßen werden.

How are and how were different History Politics* conducted at the Academy of Fine Arts?Until which extent was and is the participation in Colonialism, Fascism and National Socialism considered in it?Where do gaps, ruptures, continuities occur?Which role plays disremembrance, repression, self-victimization?Which history-political manifestations exist at the Academy – and which do not exist?

These questions mark the start of the course – and thereby the beginning of establishing a continuing “Platform History Politics” at the Academy. They should be related to other questions that are to be developed. The critical examination of history-political processes in comparable institutions should raise the sensibility for a survey of the current state in the direct study and work environment. A preliminary visualization of traced habits and usualness, of oddities and tremendousness as well as of other remarkable [ab-]normalities, should initiate broader discussions about History Politics at the Academy.
