Erdem TaşdelenTitle: The Curtain Sweeps Down  

Erdem Taşdelen will present an overview of the themes explored in his recent project The Curtain Sweeps Down. He will take up the notion of pseudotranslation as a lens through which to view the social and political transformations in Turkey in the last few decades, and consider whether self-concealment can be an effective strategic tool to advance progressive politics in environments where open dissent may be too risky.  CV: Erdem Taşdelen is a Turkish-Canadian artist based in Toronto. His practice is rooted in conceptualism and involves a range of media including installation, video, sculpture, sound and artist books. His diverse projects bring self-expression into question within the context of culturally learned behaviors, where he often draws from unique historical narratives to address the complexities of current sociopolitical issues.

Britta BennoTitle: Estonian Contemporary Printmaking Female Artists: Spaces, Identities, Mediums

The main focus of the presentation is on contemporary women printmakers in Estonia, including Britta Benno’s latest works. What are the practices by the women artists selected by Benno Britta and how they reflect contemporary Estonian printmaking? The presentation approach is based on research and conversations with artists, analyzing their portfolios and art practices.CV: Britta Benno is a printmaker and drawing artist living and working in Tallinn, Estonia. She presents autobiographical narratives in her personal graphic language while using various techniques – drawing, printmaking, animation and installation. She is preparing currently her doctoral research thesis at the in Estonian Academy of Arts on Estonian contemporary female printmaking artists and their spaces, identities, mediums.

Heather BeardsleyTitle: Fabulatory Epistemology: the Art of Faking Science

For the past few of years I have been exploring intersections of art and science within my work, both by emulating how scientists work and borrowing the visual language with which scientific research is communicated to a non-expert public. This lecture would examine projects I have carried out over the past few years on this topic, examining the process and the outcomes of these works. I would also give a brief explanation of the project I am carrying out during the KulturKontakt residency in Vienna.CV: Heather Beardsley is an American visual artist that received her BA from the University of Virginia in 2009, and her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Fibers and Material Studies in 2015. After graduating, Beardsley was granted a Fulbright Scholarship for Installation Art in Vienna, Austria for the 2015-2016 academic year, and the following year she was awarded a twelve-month Braunschweig Projects International Artist Scholarship by the Ministry of Science and Culture of Lower Saxony, Germany. She has exhibited work throughout the United States and Europe, including New York, Chicago, Austria, Germany, Slovakia, the UK, and Ireland.

Iwona Ogrodzka and Karolina BalcerTitle: Art & Business Collective Wykwitex: How to build a successful team and make art together?

Ogrodzka and Balcer have been working as a part of an art collective called Wykwitex. Considering their artistic experience in a group made up of 7 members, they will show advantages and disadvantages of team work. It will contain the issue of co-authorship and the division of artistic work in the group. The presentation will contain examples of actions and divisions of the Wykwitex group.CV: Iwona Ogrodzka, born 1991, graduated of the Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw. She works in the field of new media art, installation and painting. Karolina Balcer, born in 1988, lives and works in Wroclaw. She is active in various fields, including painting, video and installations in public spaces. Balcer is particularly interested in architecture as a tool of organizing social life. Ogrodzka and Balcer are members of the Managing Board of Wykwitex, Wroclaw (Poland).

It is a film about the struggle of the Amadiba Crisis Committee.15.00 to 17.00 Q & A with Nonhle Mbuthuma (Amadiba Crisis Committee)/South AfricaThe proposed Xolobeni mine is a project by Transworld, a wholly owned subsidiary of Australian corporation Mineral Commodities (MRC), and would be one of the largest titanium mines in South Africa. Amadiba Crisis Committee (ACC) was formed in 2007 by villagers of Xolobeni in Pondoland to fight mining titanium in their area. About 200 households face displacement from the farmland on which their livelihoods depend. It is unclear how the villagers will be compensated and where their livestock will move. They will mine around people’s houses. Also this is a proclaimed marine protected area – mining cannot take place here. ACC believe that the mining eco-tourism and agriculture are real development alternatives and that mining will rule out tourism trade.

Exhibition reflection DIE STADT OHNE JUDEN MUSLIME FLÜCHTLINGE AUSLÄNDER, with Andreas Brunner, one of the curators of the show.“The City Without Jews” was the title of Hugo Bettauer’s 1922 novel in which he described the expulsion of all Jews from Vienna, considered an inconceivable idea at the time. Director Hans Karl Breslauer’s film adaptation in 1924, however, was already accompanied by disruptive actions by National Socialists, and Bettauer was shot and killed by a Nazi in 1925. The exhibition THE CITY WITHOUT accompanies the release of the newly restored silent film, internationally regarded as the first cinematographic statement against anti-Semitism.

Directed by Alain Resnais, it was made ten years after the liberation of Nazi concentration camps. The title is taken from the notorious Nacht und Nebel (German for "Night and Fog") program of abductions and disappearances decreed by the Nazis on 7 December 1941.Running time32 minutes

Ruth Beckermann’s film doesn’t duplicate the exhibition, but begins were it ends: in a commentary. Its subject-matter is less about history than remembering, less about the past than the present …

The film follows Hanna Bohman, a Canadian civilian who has spent the last three years in Syria as a volunteer soldier battling ISIS. As a member of the YPJ, an all-female Kurdish army, Hanna gives an inside look at the women fighting for liberation in one of the world’s most dangerous countries.

Director David Darg is an award winning film maker and co-founder of RYOT Media.

Part 2, introduction and screening of Valentin Areh, Radovan Karadzic's Secret Plans, 2016, 51 min, documentary for television.

The TV film shows newly retrieved materials and accounts obtained at the trial of Radovan Karadzic at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, Hague Tribunal.

The documentary was premiered 2 days before the final sentence to Karadzic at the Haag Tribunal, March 24, 2016. Karadzic was sentenced to 40 years for Srebrenica genocide in BiH, among others criminal acts.

Valentin Areh (born 1971) is a Slovenian journalist, war correspondent and writer. He participated in 1991 as a soldier in the short Slovenian war for independence. He subsequently attended Ljubljana University, studying history and sociology. He concluded his studies at Ljubljana by obtaining a Master's degree covering certain sociological aspects of the US electoral system. Areh has fifteen years of experience as a war correspondent in places such as Croatia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Chechnya, Afghanistan and Iraq. He was one of the few journalists to remain in Kosovo during the Kosovo War of 1999 and he survived a tortuous escape out of the country during NATO’s war to expel Serbian forces.

Marika Schmiedt, renewed Austrian artist, was invited by the Studio for Post-conceptual art Practices (PCAP) at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna to have a workshop with students. She proposed the title that is as well central to her work: INTEGRATION NO THANKS! Perspectives & Resistance.

The result of the workshop is 17 posters by 13 authors presented at the Rundgang in 2018 as a collaborative exchange in between Marika Schmiedt and the students.

Part of the Language Strategies exhibition in London is a workshop. Taking part in the workshop from PCAP are Sara Bissen, Sarah Raffaela Jackel, Aaron Kimmig, Leonie Knez and Dominik Szereday.

Catherine Sarah YoungTitle: Art, Science, and Norms: How Interdisciplinary Art can Inspire Behavioral Change

How can interdisciplinary art strive to affect social change? Young has developed both individual and collaborative projects that raise awareness on climate change, science policy, and various systems that govern the beliefs of society and the sustainability of the planet.

CV: Catherine Sarah Young is a Chinese-Filipina artist, designer, and writer. She holds an MFA in Interaction Design from the School of Visual Arts in New York City as a Fulbright scholar and a bachelor’s degree in molecular biology and biotechnology from the University of the Philippines.She investigates nature, and the tensions between nature and technology. She has an international exhibition, residency, and awards profile and has collaborated with scientists, companies, non-profit organizations, and communities, most recently around Southeast Asia, Uganda, and the Amazon rainforest.

Saša TatićTitle: Homewards

Relocating myself from the environment of a modern transitional society, from which I am coming, helped me to select the developed adaptive skills of a current time that are built on individual levels, but because of their multiplicity and, more often, mutual compatibility built a mass phenomenon. The group of works addressed as Homewards represents the latest produced works based on selected relations to home, heritage and immaterial values that in the same spirit, through the personal examples reflect the collective functional behavior.

CV: Saša Tatić was born in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina and currently lives and works in Berlin. She graduated from the Academy of Arts at University of Banja Luka in 2014. She completed her Master studies at the Bauhaus Universität, Department of Public Art and New Artistic Strategies in 2017. Winner of several awards praises and grants in the field of visual arts. She exhibited on numerously regional and international exhibitions and festivals

Robin WaartTitle: The author as receiver

Robin Waart uses repetition and collecting as a framework for projects with books, movie stills, photography, polaroids, and book pages. His works raise questions about (dis)continuity, what it means to look at, or do, the same thing over and over. Focusing on the relationship between receiver and author, his projects address the reasons why, and for whom we make what we make.

AusstellungMarika Schmiedt: Eine Untersuchungen zum Umgang der VBKÖ mit ihrer NS-Vergangenheit

Der Katalog zeigt, wie ein Konzept des angeblich naturwissenschaftlich gesicherten Rassenbegriffsfortgeschrieben wird und wie stark Sprache durch rassistische Diskurse und Wissensfelder geprägt ist. Dabei wird deutlich vor Augen geführt, dass die Bilder und der Umgang damit vom Ausgang des Kaiserreichs bis in unsere Tage keine prinzipiellen Unterschiede aufweisen.

[...] Sprache kommt vor der Tat besteht aus verschiedenen fotokopierten und gedruckten Materialien, die historische archivierte Dokumente zeigen und diese mit aktuellem On- und Offline-Material parallelisiert, das durchgehend Roma rassifiziert. Antiromaismus besteht seit Jahrhunderten; anstatt zu verschwinden oder sich zu verringern verändert er nur seine Form. Um es klar auszudrücken: Anti-Romaismus wechselte über von Schwarzweißfotos zur Hochglanz-Farbfotografie und suggestiven Titeln, die nun online verfügbar sind. Schmiedts Arbeit handelt nicht nur von der Rückkehr der unterdrückten Roma, dies würde ja einen temporären, wenn nicht gar einfach symptomatischen „Bruch“ in der Geschichtlichkeit der Unsichtbarkeit der Roma bedeuten. Nein, Schmiedts Arbeit handelt auch davon, dass die kontinuierlichen Praktiken und Geschichten der Diskriminierung, Marginalisierung und Segregation nicht vergessen werden[...] (M. Grzinic).

Border Thinking: Disassembling Histories of Racialized Violence aims to question and provide answers to current border issues in Europe. Central to this investigation is a refugee crisis that is primarily a crisis of global Western capitalism and its components: modernization, nationalism, structural racism, dispossession, and social, political, and economic violence. In this volume, these notions and conditions are connected with the concept of borders, which seems to have disappeared as a function of the global neoliberal economy but is palpably reappearing again and again through deportations, segregations, and war. How can we think about these relations in an open way, beyond borders? Is it possible to develop border thinking for a radical transformation, as a means to revolutionize the state of things? To do this, we must reconsider what is possible for the social and the political as well as for art and culture.

Border Thinking: Disassembling Histories of Racialized Violence beschäftigt sich mit dem Problemfeld Grenzen in Europa und sucht Antworten zur aktuellen Situation. Im Zentrum steht die aktuelle Flüchtlingskrise, die vor allem eine Krise des westlichen Kapitalismus ist, mit Aspekten der Modernisierung, Nationalismus, strukturellem Rassismus, Enteignung, sozialer, politischer und ökonomischer Gewalt. In Border Thinking werden diese Bedingungen mit der Thematik der Grenzen verknüpft: Grenzen sind in der globalisierten Welt scheinbar aufgelöst, werden aber durch Deportationen, Segregation und Krieg immer wieder augenscheinlich. Wie können wir über diese Zusammenhänge “über Grenzen hinweg” nachdenken? Ist es möglich, dieses Nachdenken für eine radikale Transformation, eine Revolution der bestehenden Verhältnisse zu nutzen? Ein Beginn könnte das Nachdenken darüber sein, was im Sozialen und Politischen, in Kunst und Kultur möglich ist.

Dr Althea Legal-MillerLecturer in American History and Culture, Canterbury Christ Church University

Dr Legal-Miller is a Lecturer in American History and Culture at Canterbury Christ Church University, United Kingdom. She received her BA in American Studies with Year Abroad (University of California, Berkeley), MA in Contemporary Cinema Cultures and PhD in American Studies all from King’s College London. Dr Legal-Miller has received a number of prestigious scholarships and awards, including an Arts and Humanities Research Council Fellowship at the John W. Kluge Center in the Library of Congress (Washington, DC), and the Mae C. King Distinguished Paper Award on Women, Gender and Black Politics from the Association for the Study of Black Women in Politics. Dr Legal-Miller has two forthcoming publications for edited books on Black Lives Matter and Martin Luther King Jr., and is currently working on a monograph on police and penal sexual brutality against African American community organisers during the 1960s.

Resisting Since: Liberating the Narrative through the creative

Lecture proposed and organized by Post-conceptual Art Practices (PCAP/IBK): Marina Grzinic, Muzaffer Hasaltay and student mentor: Robert Jolly

SUMMARY LECTUREThe dominant (western) narrative works to sequester fluidity of voice and agency – to maintain a power structure which feeds on the subjugation of the “othered.” Manufactured systems of reality become indistinguishable from what we experience on a day to day. This legacy of the existing power structures reliance on a faux Grand Narrative, which places the mono-chromed phallocentric at centre, is centuries old. However, for just as long, and longer, “other worlds/realities” have existed, and resisted the dominant parole, often through the force of the creative.

Jamika Ajalon will speak to how the form and content of her work reflects the way in which art, the fusion of different and layered mediums, (text, sound, visual, and so on), can be used not only to disrupt dominant narrative but brings to the surface a continuance of resistance. The content of much of many of her projects, whether it be, sound, music, text or visual manipulation, integrates ideas around fugitivity & resistance with memory & agency. Ajalon asks to how we can manipulate the created, found, and/or imagined “data” and/or elements in fusion/collusion – to open space for radically alternative narratives which give way to radically alternative futures.

Jamika Ajalon CV: I am inter-disciplinary artist who works with different mediums independently, but also in multiple fusions – incorporating written and spoken text, sound/music, and visuals. A nomad, I grew up in the USA but have lived for years in Europe, including England, and France. During travels (including countries in Africa) I have met and collaborated with other artists, academics, who challenge “frontiers” (external borders as well as internalized) and are planting seeds. A science fiction nerd, I have always looked at “space” as a place to realize and talk about possible futures. My publications and performances have been diverse. They include a series of audio-visual anti-lectures which explore memory, and nomadic subjectivity through an “afro-futurist" lens. As I roam, I have had the good fortune to perform, record, tour , publish and exhibit/screen my work in Vienna London, Berlin, South Africa, Senegal, Kampala, Paris...

Seit 2015 arbeitet Molden an der Kollektivbiographie einer jüdisch-kommunistischen Familie im 20. Jahrhundert. Für das „Gedenkjahr 2018“ bereitet er gemeinsam mit KünstlerInnen und KulturwissenschaftlerInnen eine Reihe historischer Interventionen rund um den Mexikoplatz in Wien vor.

Im März 2017 starteten sie mit ihrem ersten Event im Fluc und unterstützten unter anderem im Juli 2017 das erste Nyansapo Black Feminism Festival in Paris. Im Zuge vom Rundgang 2018, stellen sie ihr neues Event „The Boujee Bodega“ vor, bei dem Poetry Nights, Panels, Diskussionen, Screenings und mehr vorgestellt werden.

Die Schattenseiten des Rechtsstaates.In deutscher und englischer SpracheWo landen eigentlich geistesabnorme Rechtsbrecher? Die Antwort: Im sogenannten Maßnahmenvollzug. Dieser 1975 unter Justizminister Christian Broda eingeführte Art der Unterbringung die stets unter dem Motto "Therapie statt Strafe" stehen sollte, ist seit langem heiß umstritten. Die Zahl der Untergebrachten steigt kontinuierlich, das Justizministerium begründet dies mit einem erhöhten Sicherheitsbedürfnis in der Bevölkerung. Für die Untergebrachten bedeutet dies vor allem ohne Aussicht auf ein Ende eingesperrt zu sein.Auch ist von überforderten GutachterInnen und RichterInnen, einer zu niedrigen Einweisungsschwelle und medizinischer Zwangsbehandlung die Rede. Der Film begleitet Max, der wegen gefährlicher Drohung drei Jahre im Maßnahmenvollzug verbrachte und lässt verschiedene Expertinnen aus Zivilgesellschaft und Politik zu Wort kommen.

17.30 UhrAaron Kimmig präsentiert unterschiedliche Projekte, die sich mit der politischen Situation in Österreich auseinandersetzen. Er wir darüber berichten, wie in FPÖ-Facebook Gruppen interveniert werden kann und wie digital mit den Aussagen von Sebastian Kurz in seiner Rede zu dem am 9.11.2017 konstituierten Parlament gespielt werden kann.

Eröffnung des Ausstellungsprojekts: Plakat-Serie von Marika Schmiedt und den Studierenden der Akademie der Bildenden Künste Wien. Die Plakat-Serie wurde im Rahmen des Workshops „Integration Nein danke!“ produziert. Zentrale Aufgabe der Ausstellung ist die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Spannungsverhältnis von Kunst- und Kultur und gesellschaftspolitischen Entwicklungen.Vortrag „Zeitgeschichte auf dem Prüfstand“ von Berthold Molden (Wien).In deutscher und englischer SpracheBERTHOLD MOLDEN, geboren in Wien, 2005 Dissertation über aktuelle Geschichtsdebatten in Guatemala. Seither lehrt er Globalgeschichte an der Universität Wien. 2005-2010 Leitung eines Oral History-Forschungsprojekts über das soziale Gedächtnis des Kalten Krieges auf beiden Seiten des Eisernen Vorhangs. 2010-2015 Gastprofessuren an der University of Chicago, der University of New Orleans, der Sorbonne und der Université Jean Jaurès in Toulouse. Seit 2015 arbeitet Molden an der Kollektivbiographie einer jüdisch-kommunistischen Familie im 20. Jahrhundert. Für das „Gedenkjahr 2018“ bereitet er gemeinsam mit KünstlerInnen und KulturwissenschaftlerInnen eine Reihe historischer Interventionen rund um den Mexikoplatz in Wien vor.
