The courses were non-vocational; they were not intended to improve one’s productivity at work, but rather to allow for personal and collective growth. The courses sought to help workers reflect not only upon their working conditions but also on their lives. A large part was devoted to the re-elaboration and reinterpretation of what was defined as the "lived experience" of those attending: their experiences with work, emigration, cultural and language discrimination, union struggles, etc.The film was produced in collaboration with these students as part of their studies for the class, turning the curriculum's questions about the representation of women into questions about the representation of themselves.Adriana Monti writes in her introduction to the film:"After I had been working with a particular group of housewives for a year we started shooting the film Scuola Senza Fine (literally School Without End) almost casually, in 1979. I was able to get equipment free of charge and money to pay for the film was made available.Rediscovering the pleasure of reading and studying was reliving their adolescence. It was important for them to have teachers to whom they could tell in writing what they had done and thought, their past history and plans for the future. The film shows how the women related to each other at that time and the special closeness each woman felt for every other – perhaps because they came from the same place, or shared the same ideals and way of thinking, or, simply, because they were fond of each other. For many women, rediscovering the mother/teacher relationship meant being able to express thoughts which had often been undervalued or disregarded (most of the housewives attending the course had given up their education to go to work or had not been able to make use of the knowledge they had already, because they stayed at home after getting married). The opportunity to relive that relationship in a learning situation stimulated a very interesting kind of writing and thought."

12, 6.12 and 7.12.2013 CLASS SPACEGender Studies Conference// SEMINAR WORKSHOP, guests

Thursday, 5 December:15.30 - 19.00

Friday, 6 December:8.00 - 20.00

Saturday, 7 December:8.00 - 19.00

9 to 14.12.2013

FILM CLASS SEMINAR, prof. Haraway, 1984)

Aneta Stojnic is currently Ernst-Mach Scholarship holder for a research project at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Conceptual Art study program, IBK.

The lectures focus on the construction of the social, cultural and personal identity in media-dominated environment, relating to the contiguity between "cyborg" and "queer" and its implications in the new technology environment. The cyborg entity deconstructs the binary relations between object and subject, nature and culture, being and non-being, organism and machine, male and female, possibility and impossibility of taking controls own once own body.

The lecture no. 2 will re-elaborate the "Cyborg manifesto" (D. Haraway, 1984), after 30 years in the first world the question of the body as a social construct is more relevant than ever. The technological environment that is here at stand is neither politically nor ideologically innocent. In the contemporary world, information communication technologies are defining the condition of neoliberal globalization. Therefore we need to constantly re-articulate our position when we interact with(in) technology. We need to "queer the cyborg". In this light Stojnic will offer a historical analysis starting from occurrence of the concept of cyborg in fiction to the present moment of "cyborg society". Her thesis is that unlike cyberpunk distopian fictions where the cyborgs represented the margins of the society i.e. the asymmetrical others, today the possibility of "cyborgization" of once own body becomes the privilege of those who can afford it. Contemporary cyborgs have become the first in relation to whom are constructed the imperfect, dispensable, mortal others.

13.11.2013, WEDNESDAY

At 14.30 reflection class travel Greece

16.00 to 19.00Presentation MA critical Studies and Erasmus

Anna-Stina TreumundAlain Volpe

At 19.00Working with diplomants.

Gin Mueller (Dr.Phil.) lives in Vienna. Löcker Verlag, Wien 2013Edited by the Editorial Group for Writing Insurgent Genealogies

The book is the outcome of processes of studying, learning and de-learning, established in the Post-Conceptual Art Practices class at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. What’s at stake here is to reflect not only on historical colonialism but also on the ways in which capitalism frames the world we inhabit. The notion of decoloniality has provided a radical option with which to rethink learning processes coming from positions that are not exclusively Western-orientated but are instead formed by other political-social contexts and perspectives.

Taking part in the presentation:Carolina Agredo, Annalisa Cannito, Miltiadis Gerothanasis, Marina Grzinic, Marissa Lôbo, Ivana Marjanovic, editors

With numerous contributors in the book from Vienna.

21.11.2014, THURSDAY

8.30 to 12.00Individual meetings, Grzinic, office

12.00 to 14.00CLASS MEETING, discussion RUNDGANG program, MANDATORY meeting

21.11.2014, THURSDAY15.00 until 17.30

Seminar/workshop with Gin MuellerTITLE: Queer Performance and Activism in public SpaceOpen to the entire academy and organized in collaboration with the Netzwerk and Conceptual Art dpt, Akbild.

26.11.2013, TUESDAYAt 20.00Post Conceptual Art Practices (PCAP) -Open Critical Debates on Visual and Theoretical productions: “Images, Theory, Politics, and Activism”

Seminar consisting of three lectures with the title Conceptual art and techno-bodies ("cyborg" and "queer" in the new technology environment) by Aneta Stojnic, PhD, theoretician, artist and curator, Belgrade, Serbia

Lecture no 3: conclusion on the topic relating to the body; from natural trough cultural to the technological body

Aneta Stojnic is currently Ernst-Mach Scholarship holder for a research project at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Conceptual Art study program, IBK.

The lectures will focus on the construction of the social, cultural and personal identity in media-dominated environment, relating to the contiguity between "cyborg" and "queer" and its implications in the new technology environment. These shifts produced and keep on producing, unstable changes in the architecture of the reality, indicating the influence of the symbolic aspect over the physical aspect. Weather we talk about (bio)technologically and medically altered physical bodies or mediation of the so called “natural” body into the cyber/digital space, human beings no longer perceive their own bodies as fixed, finished, organically complete entities, but rather as flux, extendible bodies in the permanent process of becoming. This will be connected with questions of biopower and biopolics.

The Right of Passage is partially constructed through a series of interviews with Ariella Azoulay, Antonio Negri and Sandro Mezzadra. These interviews form the starting point for a discussion in Barcelona, one of Europe’s most densely populated and multicultural cities, with a group of people living “without papers”. The title, The Right of Passage, refers to the stages, or “rites of passage” that mark important transitions on the path to selfhood. The exchange of “rites” with “rights” suggests that freedom of movement must become a right granted to every person – regardless of his or her place of birth. As the film explores these journeys not only transform those who embark upon them but also the places they inhabit.

7 to 12.10.2013MONDAY to FRIDAY (INCLUDED)FILM CLASS by prof. Aneta Stojnic

Seminar consisting of three lectures with the title Conceptual art and techno-bodies ("cyborg" and "queer" in the new technology environment)

Abstract:

The lectures will focus on the construction of the social, cultural and personal identity in media-dominated environment, relating to the contiguity between "cyborg" and "queer" and their implications in the new technology environment. The cyborgs represent liminal beings that do not seek for the stable essentialist identities. In the myth of the cyborg Donna Haraway sees the political potential to liberate feminism from tendencies toward unified identification, arguing that instead feminists should seek for alliances based in affinity rather than identity. However, almost 30 years after the "Cyborg manifesto" (Haraway, 1984) self-design has become a common, one could say, an everyday practice in the first world, thus the question of the body as a social construct is more relevant than ever. The mentioned topics will be addressed within the discursive framework of conceptual art practices, performance studies and theory/philosophy of media. Last but not least we will focus on the question of how these newly established relations, protocols and procedures are, and can be used in performance (artistic) practices, with the emphasize on the practices that affirm critical thinking in post conceptual art.

Mag. Aneta Stojnic, theoretician artist and curator, Belgrade, Serbia is currently Ernst-Mach Scholarship holder for a research project at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Conceptual Art study program. She is PhD candidate at University of Arts in Belgrade, thesis title: “Critical Theory of Performance in Digital Art: Towards the New Political Performance”.

1 lecture: cyborg" and "queer" and their implications in the new technology environment.A short history of projects of how these newly established relations, protocols and procedures are, and can be used in performance (artistic) practices, with the emphasize on the practices that affirm critical thinking in post conceptual art.

15.10.2013, Tuesday

10.30 to 14.00 individual meetings, GRZINIC office

Place: Konzeptuelle Kunst |1Stock/1 Floor, ATELIERHAUS Lehargasse 6–8 | 1060 Wien

WHEN: At 14.00 until 16.00

Post Conceptual Art Practices (PCAP) -Open Critical Debates on Visual and Theoretical productions: “Images, Theory, Politics, and Activism”

READING and DISCUSSION on theory and arts and politics (leading the reading Grzinic/Stojnic)Erase them!
Later he could graduate his medicine study, until today he runs in Vienna own medical practice. For 20 years he was deployed by Austrian Ministry of Justice as psychiatrist in charge for imprisoned drug-addicted adolescents. In the public Allahyari is known rather as filmmaker. After early experimental and avant-garde-films a collaboration with bigger Austrian productions followed. They came out of leftist groups themselves, but were sick of the fact that everything was organized from top down, and that women only served tea, or their role was a purely sexual one, or they were nothing more than secretaries.

They stated: “No, we cannot carry on doing this. We believe in revolution, we believe in social change, but this organization is not for us!”

That’s why Mujeres Creando is autonomous from political parties, NGOs, the state, hegemonic groups, leaders of unions groups.

They said: “We don’t want bosses, figureheads or exalted leaders. We organize ourselves horizontally, and nobody represents anybody else each woman represents herself.”

Organized by Marissa Lôbo (as part of the collective maiz, Linz).Languages: English, German, Spanish

27.06.2013, ThursdayAt 11:30 Seminar by Eduard Freudmann

27.06.2013, Thursday10.00 to 14.30Ind. meetings, office Grzinic

27.06.2013, ThursdayAt 14.30, M1SHARING MATERIALS , INFO, THOUGHTS FROM TURKEY INSURECTION!AUSTAUSCH VON IDEEN, INFORMATIONEN UBER DEN WIDERSTAND IN ISTANBUL, BERICHT UND ERFHAHRUNGSAUSTAUSCHPresentation: Naz Gundogdu

27.06.2013, ThursdayAt 16.00, M1

Presentation: Daniela Ortiz and Xose Quiroga.

The Barcelona based artists Daniela Ortiz & Xose Quiroga work as a collective in a series of projects that often operate as transcontinental interventions. Originally from Cuzco, Peru, Daniela Ortiz lives in Barcelona since 2007 reflecting on her work about her condition as an immigrant. Together with Quiroga, they investigate how race, class, gender, nationality and ethnicity connect to postcolonial migration. After continuous collaboration with the campaign for the closure of Detention Centers for Immigrants in Spain their work has taken a more activist turn. In the last years the projects they have developed are mostly related to how the nation-states and societies manage and relate to the phenomena of migration.

Their approach can be read as an update to the conceptualist practices of ‘the South’, an attempt at a critical reactivation, as portrayed in 'From Di Tella to Tucumán Arde' (2000) by Ana Longoni and Mariano Mestman, and 'Didactics of liberation. Latin American conceptual art' (2008) by Luis Camnitzer. Their work seeks to expose in many levels how structures of oppression function.

daniela-ortiz.comwww.xosequiroga.com

Presentation organized and moderated by Imayna Caceres.

27.06.2013, ThursdayAt 19.00,Ort/PLACE: C 3, Sensengasse 3, 1090 WienKnowledge, Notions of History and the Politics of Memory: Audre Lorde's Black Internationalism and Black Feminism in Germany ***Vortragende: * Peggy Piesche *

"Eine Schwarze, Kriegerin und Dichterin, die ihre Arbeit tut und gekommen ist, euch zu fragen, ob ihr die Eure tut."

Dieser Aufruf zum politischen Handeln zeigte in Deutschland eine großartige Wirkung: das Erwachen einer Bewegung. The impetus for the film project was to restore to academic and artistic discourses a recognition of both the originality and contradictory nature of this major thinker. It was initially conceived as a reflection on the revival of interest in Fanon's ideas in black visual and performance arts. The black arts movement in Britain and North America had sought a more substantial basis for reflection on the black body and its representations. In development, the film's mandate became broader to include other aspects of Fanon's influence and legacy.'

6.05.2013, Monday

PCAP-Open Critical Debates on Films: »Cinema Critico«At 19.00 CINENOVA film program in ViennaWATCHING THE FILM and DISCUSSION

Title Leila and The WolvesDirector Heiny SrourCountry UK/ LebanonYear 1984Duration 90 minutes, 16 mm, DVD

Drawing on the Arab heritage of oral tradition and mosaic pattern, Leila And The Wolves is an exploration of the collective memory of Arab women and their hidden role in history throughout the past half century of the Middle-East, both in Palestine and in Lebanon. The film is a modern-day fairy tale about the suppressed history of Arab people and especially Arab women. Through the eyes of Leila, a Lebanese student dissatisfied with the official, colonial, male-dominated version of ‘history’ the film reconstructs women’s daily unglamorous and silent sacrifices as much a part of history as men’s military ‘heroic’ action. ‘The visual leitmotiv of the film is Arab women sitting immobile under the high sun, while half-naked men bathe joyfully on the beach. Gradually, women will start getting impatient, as historic events go by, and they will move towards the water for a dip... but in the Middle-East the dance of death still continues.’ (Heiny Srour)

7.05.2013, Tuesday

INDVIDUAL MEETINGS, 10.00 to 15.00, Grzinic office

At 15.00 until 17.00

Reading: ENG/DEUTSCH version (original FRENCH!)Françoise VergèsThe African Slave Trade and Slavery Blind Spots in French ThoughtSklavenhandel und das System der Sklaverei Blinde Flecken im französischen Denkeneipcp.net

7.05.2013, Tuesday

At 18.00 until 19.00

PCAP-Open Critical Debates on Films: »Cinema Critico«CINENOVA film program in ViennaWATCHING THE FILM and DISCUSSIONTitle Now PretendDirector Leah GilliamCountry USAYear 1991Duration 10 minutes, 16 mm, DVDNOW PRETEND is an experimental investigation into the use of race as an arbitrary signifier. Many young people want to move away to the big cities. In 2005, a group of commited young people decided not to put up with this situation any longer. They founded the Cultural Society and Social Forum Freiwerk and organized a three day charity festival called Bock Ma’s Benefizfestival. Until 2012 it used tob e the annual cultural highlight in the region. Now, after the end of this project, the next generation enterst he scene. Xapiri is an experimental film about Yanomami shamanism that was filmed during a meeting of 37 shamans at the Watoriki Reserve, Roraima, in March of 2011. The film was designed to take into account two different notions of image: those of the Yanomami and ours. Therefore, it does not set out to explain shamanism, its methods or procedures, but to allow different cultures to visualize and feel the way in which the shamans "embody" the spirits, their bodies and voices.

One of the filmmakers, prof.

From the Right to the City to the Urban Revolution" erschienen.

With the global re-emergence of urban social movements and the multiple conflicts in urban space over the last couple of years a growing demand evolved for critical analysis of the current, neoliberal type of urban development. In this context the work of David Harvey, a critical geographer and Marxist social theorist, forms an import reference point for many activists and urban researchers. Since the publication of his groundbreaking book "Social Justice and the City" in the year 1973 Harvey is – among plenty of other topics – concerned with the interrelation of urbanization and capitalism, his latest book in 2012 called "Rebel Cities. From the Right to the City to the Urban Revolution".The lecture examines the contribution of Harvey's work for a better understanding of the neoliberal urban development – and its crisis – and analyzes the chances, but also the weaknesses of existing struggles for the “right to the city”.

After that, we will have a deeper look on local (Viennese) examples and try to question, compare and evaluate some of the topics raised above.

14.03.2013, ThursdayAt 11:30 Seminar Eduard Freudmann

18.03.2013, MondayMontag, 18. CONTEXT about the film, debate, intro provided by Catalina Ravessoud.ABOUT THE FILM:La Commune is the name given to the French revolutionary government established by the people of Paris during the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871). On March 17 and 18, Parisians led an uprising against the national government, which fled the capital and re-established itself in Versailles. The radicals established a proletarian government in Paris, called the Central Committee of the National Guard, and set March 26 as the date for the election of a municipal council. This council became known as the Commune of 1871, and its members as Communards. Most Communards were followers of Louis Auguste Blanqui, a revolutionary held prisoner in Versailles by the head of the National Assembly, Adolphe Thiers. Other Communards supported the school of socialism expounded by the French philosopher Pierre Joseph Proudhon and members of the International Workingmen's Association, of which Karl Marx was then a corresponding secretary. For the film LA COMMUNE we travel back in time to 1871. A journalist for Versailles Television broadcasts a soothing and official view of events while a Commune television is set up to provide the perspectives of the Paris rebels. On a stage-like set, more than 200 actors interpret characters of the Commune, especially the Popincourt neighborhood in the XIth arrondissement. They voice their own thoughts and feelings concerning the social and political reforms. The telling of this story rests primarily on depicting the people of the Commune, and those who suppressed them.Deliberately, this film is an attempt to challenge existing notions of documentary film, as well as the notions of 'neutrality' and 'objectivity' so beloved by the mass media today. The film is not intended as an apologia on behalf of the Paris Commune. But at the same time, it attempts to show that the Paris Commune, for all its human frailty, its internal conflicts and its blundering, was an event of major importance, not least because of the way in which its leading reformers tried to work with social process, by a direct involvement with the community and its needs.

20.03.2013, WednesdayAt 11:30 Seminar by Eduard Freudmann

22.03.2013, FridayM1, Seminar with Elske Rosenfeld. March, 10-13 and 14.30-17.3024. April, 10-13 and 14.30-17.3026. April, 10-13 and 14.30-17.3024. June, 10-13 and 14.30-16.00

ABOUT: The seminar/workshop combines a reading of selected texts from aesthetic, political and queer theory, with discussions of artistic reference material, touching on practices of re-enactment, as well as the histories of performance and body art, to reclaim a notion of embodied practices in art that avoids essentialist claims of physical presence or authenticity. Looking at the different ways the body has been used in different, also non-Western traditions of body art, can we reconstruct an artistic practice that configures the body as an outside to language and thus, as a disruptive force that can open up spaces of rupture and openness in the status quo?We will look especially at how the body emerges as political in recent situations of unrest, protest or revolution, such as the Arab Spring or the Occupy/Democracía Real Ya movements, where political/revolutionary space was constituted primarily by the physical assembly and sustenance of bodies in space. Secondly, looking at the post-revolutionary moment of failure or closure in relation to these instances, but also, further back in history, in the revolutions of 1989 in Eastern Europe, we ask how the past experience of revolution persists in the body as potentiality, even after revolution becomes closed down in language, re-institutionalisation and historiography.Based on our discussions of texts and art works and using materials from the these different historical instances, we arrive at a number of practical exercises that play with strategies of scripting, performing from script, or re-enacting through mimesis/ copying, working with gesture and movement, with objects and space, to explore the core questions of the seminar in an experimental, collaborative, and hands-on way.
The seminar requires not previous knowledge, but demands the full and active participation of participants – also with a view to a possible practical collaborative outcome.

HOLIDAYS: 25.03-8.04.2013FIRST WORKING DAY, 8.04.2013
