The Soviet Union, officially the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), was a transcontinental country that spanned much of Eurasia from 1922 to 1991.

The goal is, historically and presently, to discard the psychotic systematic violence against the Lgbtqi+ community /Serbia/ or to see the relations of the Soviet Modernism in Ukraine, in the light of the aggression on Ukraine.

CVs

Polina Baitsym is an art historian and curator specializing in the history of Ukrainian Soviet visual arts. JOSHUA SIMON (ISRAEL)In English

TITLE: The Digital Revolution is a Counter-Revolution

Technology has many definitions, but all involve a relationship to a device. It may seem redundant to say so, but technology is already embedded in social relationships. Yet, we can observe that as part of a larger assault on the social, the foreclosure of the political is being normalized through technological means - applying technological solutions to social problems. From apps to memes, echo chambers to drones, the matrix of body-device-location will be addressed in the talk as a form of metabolic synchronization that connects the biopolitical and the necropolitical.

In his talk, Dr. Simon will present a long history of the self-proclaimed digital revolution as counter-revolution; from Hobbes' notion of the sovereign as an "Artificial Soul" to the corporate control of so-called "Artificial Intelligence." Within this counter-revolution, disproportionate technological capabilities are used to normalize existing power relations of discrimination and inequality and to suppress any change in the matrix of power. This research by Dr. Simon wasconducted in preparation of the manuscript for his forthcoming book, Metastability.

BIO:Dr. Joshua Simon is a Tel Aviv-Jaffa based curator and writer working on the project "The Digital Image" at Leuphana University, Lüneburg, Germany. Simon is the author of "Neomaterialism" (Sternberg Press, 2013) and the editor of "Being Together Precedes Being: A Textbook for The Kids Want Communism" (Archive Books, 2019). The former Eastern Europe has also been excluded from Western Europe's new technological achievements in satellite technology. The seminar proposes an interdisciplinary approach to the former Eastern Europe by looking at its entanglements with technology through the filters of globality, inter-imperiality, technological hegemony, electronic cultures, and media archeology, combining decolonial and postcolonial theories.

Unit 1: Romanian Revolution Televised

The television set played the most important role in the events, helping to construct reality through television.

The conceptual basis of the project is rooted in the critique of human rights violations in the context of AI technology, geopolitics, state oppression and dictatorship or, as he calls it, the "dictatorship of algorithms" in relation to the Muslim Uyghur minority in China, visually articulated through publicly available satellite images.

In the aforementioned winning project Xinjiang Sentinel-2 (2021), the artist refers to the increasing use of algorithms by the Chinese authorities to suppress and control the Muslim minority, often leading to their detention in internment camps. On the other hand, algorithms and satellite imagery help document cultural destruction and human rights violations by the Chinese state. The project charts the growth of these camps and the destruction of cultural heritage in Xinjiang using publicly available satellite images/photos that Kimmig overlays into abstract compositions. The original satellite images of the detention camps can be found on his website dc.nanu-c.org.

Aaron Kimmig (1989, AT) graduated in International Development from the Main University of Vienna in 2019. In 2017, he embarked on postgraduate studies in Post-conceptual Art at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, and has been working at the self-organized webdesign/full-stack development collective convive.io since 2016. His work is focused on society, technology and representations of nature. Discussions of intimacy that play out on multiple levels are monitored and punished as invisible and instrumentalized by being linked to the construction of gender, sexuality, and race through media and surveillance technology with new forms of security and governmentality. Confronting invisible/visible relationships that are intimately connected through different lines of demarcation is a way to understand how different conditions are interconnected and sometimes bridge the differences created by centuries of colonial structures.

CV Mika Maruyama

Mag. Mika Maruyama, born in Japan, lives in Vienna. She is a writer, curator, and researcher whose theoretical work focuses on the intersections of queer and feminist theory, as well as the convergence of media culture and the politics of the body. She holds a master's degree in philosophy from Yokohama National College in Japan and is currently a PhD candidate at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Her interdisciplinary practice ranges from curating and zine-making to collaborative artistic practices motivated by her interest in counter-narratives and transcultural representation that challenge dominant historical narrative and normativity. In 2018, she co-founded Multiple Spirits, a queer feminist art zine, with artist Mai Endo.

14 June 2022, TuesdayAt 19.00 lecture presentation, introducing artist-in-residence Zara Julius at WeltMuseum Wien.

WHERE: Welt Museum Wien, Heldenplatz, 1010 Wien

FREE TICKETS AVAILABLE

CV: Zara Julius is an interdisciplinary social practice artist, researcher and vinyl selector based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Working with sound, video, performance and object based installation, Zara Julius' practice involves the collection, selection, and creation of archives through extensive research projects. The bulk of Zara's projects have focused on the performance of sonic, spiritual and oceanic mobilities of rapture and socio-political rupture across the (post)colony, and on (post)apartheid narratives around race, place and music as they pertain to intimate archiving practices as sites of refusal. Irene Messinger traced and analyzed 100 cases of women who tried to save their life that way. Their stories underline the importance of pre-existing networks, be it family members or politically like-minded people as an active part in escaping from the Nazi regime (Irene Messinger).

In reference to nowadays, why are there doubles standards? Who profits from these standards? Who sustains these standards? Whose safety is justified and prioritized? Who deserves to marry to save a life and who deserves to be married to be saved?

Cv'sHenrie Dennis is art curator and activist who advocates for the visibility, lives, and realities of queer Africans.

Irene Messinger is a political scientist whose award-winning PhD thesis and book deals with MOC in the Austrian Alien Law (2012) from an intersectional perspective. 2013-2016 she was focusing on MOC during the Nazi period. In 2017, she published the commented memoirs of Anita Bild, a persecuted Viennese dancer who continued her career in the UK due to a MOC in 1939. Her research agenda focuses on Migration Policies and Migration Research, as well as Biographies, Gender and Social Justice. Spanning performance and conceptual art, video works, film and pop music, lesbian activism and press photos of female snipers in the Yugoslav wars, the book analyses feminist resistance in a range of performative actions that manifest the radical embodiment of Yugoslavia’s anti-fascist, transnational and feminist legacies. It covers celebrated and lesser-known artists from the 1970s to today.

In the presentation, we will discuss the book in detail and try to answer the question of how the central thesis of the book co-relates to the genocide in Srebrenica (1995) in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Grzinic, and Margarethe Makovec, ROTOR, Graz.

Anna Sorokovaya is based from April 2022, in Forum Stadtpark Graz, connected with Office Ukraine. Shelter for Ukrainian artists. www.artistshelp-ukraine.at

Anna Sorokovaya uses an interdisciplinary approach in her practice, combining different positions – artist, curator, researcher, activist. She focuses on such issues as forced landscape changes, the impact of political and economic factors on the urban and natural environment, collectivity as a phenomenon and its meaning in the context of the atomization of society, "private and public," non-hierarchical forms of interaction based on cooperation and care. In recent years, together with Taras Kovach, she has been involved in the creation of an alternative educational and artistic space – Soshenko 33 – based on the building of the postgraduate education workshops of the National Academy of Fine Arts in Kyiv. An important principle of this place is the creation of an autonomous zone within a conservative academic system, as well as a space for critical reflection and communication. Recently, she worked on a project that addressed the preservation of the natural space and former garden surrounding the art center. This involved collaboration with architects, residents, and municipal authorities, as well as artistic and critical reflection on issues of ecology, sustainable development, and the coexistence of humans and non-humans.

IMPORTANT: To consider valid COVID-19 protective measures is mandatory. Professor, Academy of Fine Arts, University of SarajevoJovita Pristovšek, postdoctoral researcher, Academy of Fine Arts ViennaŠefik Tatlić, PhD, theorist in the fields of political philosophy and decolonial theory, BiH

A discussion based on the book by Adla Isanović, The Regime of Digital Coloniality: Bosnian Forensic Contemporaneity (Frankfurt am Main: CEEOLPRESS, 2021). This book problematizes how databases are conceived and how they relate to knowledge production in the current environment of global capitalism, biopolitics, and necropolitics. The book is indispensable for discussing about the consequences of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the 1990s and BiH contemporary transformation from a genocide into a forensic site.

We will talk over two main points. Contemporary database logic (beyond the biopolitical archive) that organizes media, social networks, state governance, politics, legal processes and military interventions, and as well a wider range of art practices, including contemporary presentation/exhibition models and forms. The forensic shift is the prevailing forensic methodology and aesthetics that is occurring in a variety of forums, including international humanitarian politics, law, and art. What are the consequences?

March 7, 2022, Monday

At 16. 00

WHERE: Atelierhaus, Lehargasse 8, 1060 Wien, 1OG Atelier Süd (M1)

Presentation future diplomas: Mahsima Kalweit Diploma in Ma in Critical studies, presentation of the work and discussion (term April 2022)

March 8, 2022, Tuesday

International Women's Day (IWD) is a global holiday celebrated annually on March 8 to commemorate the cultural, political, and socioeconomic achievements of women.

Re-construction of the WitchOrganized by the Studio for Post-conceptual Art Practices /PCAP/ prof. Grzinic, IBK, Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien. The exhibition, which will open on 13.01.2022 at VBKÖ / Austrian Association of Women Artists/ in Vienna, is an artistic and curatorial project by Anka Leśniak. Other women artists participating in the exhibition are Anna Bochkova, Valerie Habsburg and Violetta Leitner. The exhibition is the next chapter in a joint artistic investigation of Teresa Feodorowna Ries (1866-1956). The sculptor of Jewish-Russian origin was one of the most prominent artists of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and exhibited several times also in VBKÖ.

In 1938 Teresa Feodorowna Ries had to flee to Switzerland, leaving behind her entire professional life and her works of art. Among the many works she had to leave in her studio was a marble figure of the Witch, before the Witches' Sabbath (1895). The sculpture depicts a powerful nude woman looking directly into the viewer's eyes and smiling wickedly as she trims her toenails with a large pair of scissors. The Witch was later damaged a few times under unexplained circumstances. It has been restored, but the hand with the scissors is still missing.

The Witch by Teresa Ries is a witness of history, political and social changes. The damaged sculpture is an indictment of history, institutions, policies towards women (artists), antisemitism and xenophobia. As part of a research-based art project, the exhibition also raises the question of how the lost element of the witch can be symbolically reconstructed through contemporary interpretations of this work and its history. Through the presentation of works based on historical research and archives, and the use of new media art, the exhibition opens the portal between the past and contemporary women's art practices.

17-18hFelix Deiters: WTF is a non-binary University?Lesungen & Beiträge: Felix Deiters, Oke Fijal, Finn Mühl, Isa Schieche und andere

19hSCREENINGSBenjamin Janzen, InsideTheJellyBasin, 12 min, 2021Fedor Shmelkin, Being Nuclear.
