PCAP Program June 2012

4.06.2012, Monday M1 at 15.30

Erasmus presentation Hacer Kıroğlu (Istanbul)

4.06.2012, Monday M1 At 16.30 until 18.30 Presentation research project (Within the series IMAGES, HISTORIES, DISCOURSES, POLITICS PROGRAM)

Christian Nae, Iasi/Bucharest TITLE: Ideology Critique and Subjectivity Production in Eastern-European Conceptual art

Christian Nae is Art Critic & Theorist and Ph.D. Associate Professor, "George Enescu" University of Arts; Iasi/Bucharest, Romania. Nae is in Vienna for a research on ideology and subjectivity.

A short summary of the presentation: Nae tries to articulate at this point the tensions in the new production of subjectivity opened up by conceptual art in relation to the linguistic field, immaterial labor and ideology. He works on a larger project on performativity, ideology and conceptual art and as well focuses on the projects connected to the "occupy" movement and the spontaneous forms of collectivity and subjectivity. What are the forms of subjectivation and thus, what forms of resistance to a political arrest of these collective energies have been developed by the conceptual treatment of visuality? If conceptual art has been criticized by Benjamin Buchloh on the Adornian grounds of its too easy replication of capitalist structures of abstract production, how can aesthetic autonomy be reconciled with conceptual art in former Eastern Europe as a strategic use in order to obtain a specific notion of the autonomy of the self, starting from the idea that a specific politics of form has been then put into practice? What can we learn today from this long gone politics of form, pertaining for the "long sixties", and how can they be reconciled with formats of collective production and biopolitical governance active in "the long nineties" and whose collapse we are facing today?

5.06.2012, Tuesday M1 at 14.00, presentation (until 15.30) Veda Popovici Nationalism and Art: building collective identity in Romanian Art in the Ceausecu period

Who are we? is a question that has haunted intellectual imagination from the Romanian cultural space since 18th century. Always directly referring to Western Europe, the obsessive quest for place and power, for liberation and belonging has, over time, materialized into fascist politics, ethnical ontologies, internal colonization, self-colonization and the recent absolute trust in EU institutions. This presentation takes as a case study the articulation of national identity in art in Romania's 70s and 80s to understand the intricate workings of collective self-representation, identity politics and the rise of new-nationalism in the contemporary Romanian context.

Veda Popovici (born 1986, Romania) works as artist, theoretician and activist mostly in a dilettante manner. Her interests include collective representations in art, possibilities of creating the common, colonial histories. Currently, she is a PhD Candidate at the University of Art in Bucharest with a research on nationalism in Romanian art of the 1970s and 1980s. She lives and works in Bucharest.
