Françoise Vergès was awarded the 2006 Françoise Seligmann Foundation Prize against Racism for her last book, La Mémoire enchaînée. Questions sur l’esclavage (Paris 2006). She shares it with Esther Benbassa, Jean-Christophe Attias. The Seligmann Prize Against Racism was created in 2004 by Françoise Seligmann, honorary president of the League for Human Rights in memory of her husband François-Gérard Seligmann. Both fought against Nazism and for the independence of Algeria.

'Frantz Fanon: Black Skin, White Mask is a seventy-minute drama-documentary film we produced in 1996. The impetus for the film project was to restore to academic and artistic discourses a recognition of both the originality and contradictory nature of this major thinker. It was initially conceived as a reflection on the revival of interest in Fanon's ideas in black visual and performance arts. The black arts movement in Britain and North America had sought a more substantial basis for reflection on the black body and its representations. In development, the film's mandate became broader to include other aspects of Fanon's influence and legacy.'

Drawing on the Arab heritage of oral tradition and mosaic pattern, Leila And The Wolves is an exploration of the collective memory of Arab women and their hidden role in history throughout the past half century of the Middle-East, both in Palestine and in Lebanon. The film is a modern-day fairy tale about the suppressed history of Arab people and especially Arab women. Through the eyes of Leila, a Lebanese student dissatisfied with the official, colonial, male-dominated version of ‘history’ the film reconstructs women’s daily unglamorous and silent sacrifices as much a part of history as men’s military ‘heroic’ action. ‘The visual leitmotiv of the film is Arab women sitting immobile under the high sun, while half-naked men bathe joyfully on the beach. Gradually, women will start getting impatient, as historic events go by, and they will move towards the water for a dip... but in the Middle-East the dance of death still continues.’ (Heiny Srour)

In just ten minutes, this film quickly cycles through a diverse bank of images. Drawing on language, personal memories and the 1959 text, BLACK LIKE ME, it deals with Lacan’s ‘mirror stage’, ideologies of the beautiful and the movement from object to subject. NOW PRETEND is a look at how totalizing definitions function for/against women of colour - a visual and sonic effort to re/collect the self.

Sie absolviert ein Praktikum bei einer Fernsehcastingshow, fühlt sich frei und offen, ist neugierig und wohl auch etwas ziellos. Als sie beim 95. Geburtstag ihres Großvaters durch Zufall herausfindet, dass er während des Zweiten Weltkriegs bei der Waffen-SS diente, stellt das ihr Weltbild kurzfristig völlig auf den Kopf. Sie beginnt zu recherchieren, nachzufragen und die Vergangenheit ihrer Familie aufzurollen - und stößt dabei auf eine Welt der Sprachlosigkeit und Verdrängung.

"The Dead and The Living", an Austrian/Polish/German coproduction featuring Anna Fischer and August Zirner in the leading roles, tells the story of the young Sita, whose personal voyage leads her not only into her family’s own past, burdened as it is by guilty secrets, but also into the abyss of European society today, according to the coop99 production notes. Im Anschluss an den Dokumentarfilm (Start 20h) gibt es eine offene Diskussionsrunde zum Spannungsfeld “Freiraum”. Dabei sollen verschiedene Fragestellungen diskutiert werden und ein Austausch zu den Möglichkeiten, Problemen, An- und Widersprüchen von selbstorganisierten "Frei"Räumen stattfinden. Von 2005 bis 2010 wurde in Oberösterreich vom Kulturverein Freiwerk (freiwerk.org) das Bockmas, ein Benefizfestival zu Gunsten von Ute Bock organisiert. Seit 2012 gibt es in Vöcklabruck ein offenes Kulturhaus (okh.or.at) dort ist Freiwerk eine von 12 Initiativen die gemeinsam den Raum organisieren und nutzen. Das Bockmas bot als selbstorganisiertes Festival über mehrere Jahre hinweg einen konkreten regionalen Anlaufpunkt für links-politische Menschen und Gruppen, ebenso für interessierte Jugendliche aus der Umgebung.Durch selbstorganisierte Räume, Veranstaltungen und Gruppen wird versucht dem gängigen Schema von konsumorientierter Kultur ein anderes Verständnis von Raum entgegenzusetzen. Damit sollen Möglichkeiten eines solidarischen Miteinander, und Ausblicke auf eine Welt in der Herkunft, Geschlecht oder Hautfarbe keine Ausschlüsse mehr mit sich bringen sichtbar werden. Agierende landen dabei automatisch im Spannungsfeld zwischen normativer Gesellschaft, unbezahlter und nicht anerkannter Arbeit, "real"-(Partei)Politik, starren Vorschriften, dem Anspruch auf Selbstverwirklichung und dem Wunsch nach Autonomie.

english: Freiraum – free space for critical thinking about politics. In Vöcklabruck (Upper Austria), each generation of young people must fight for such space anew. It seems that there is no budget for their ideas, no understanding, no spaces. Many young people want to move away to the big cities. In 2005, a group of commited young people decided not to put up with this situation any longer. They founded the Cultural Society and Social Forum Freiwerk and organized a three day charity festival called Bock Ma’s Benefizfestival. Until 2012 it used tob e the annual cultural highlight in the region. Now, after the end of this project, the next generation enterst he scene. They see a great opportunity in a vacant building in the city center. And as they do not want to wait for drawn-out political decisions, they take the initative, too. Do-it-yourself.
